Bikes in Movies
So watching Monkey Warfare, seeing everyone riding around on bikes.. it made me think about a couple of other movies with the main character's bicycling being prominent. I Heart Huckabees and 40 Year Old Virgin. And in both those movies, though maybe not Monkey Warfare as much, the bicycling doesn't seem to be presented as a positive thing. It seems to me to be saying "Oh look how this guy just can't grow up.. he RIDES A BIKE..." And I resented this bike as shorthand for stunted maturity, and wished that bikes would be presented as awesome and cool, full of freedom and environmentally sound. This all probably stems from me being a non-driving person. I haven't even had a bike in ages.

Oh and here is a strip celebrating my dutch radio station I enjoy far too much! That was a great set of music.

You should start riding bikes, its fantastic fun. Plus! You've got a store in your city that imports Workcycle bikes. You should go check out the Dutch-styled city bikes they sell. http://raincitybikes.com/

I always used to have a bike... but at some point got out of the habit of having one. Also that I live on the side of a mountain means really steep hills ANYWHERE I go. And I like walking!

But bikes are nice. But those raincity bikes... look a little expensive. I am all about the beaters!

in much of the western world, financial solvency is confused with maturity. thus the no car or no house == immaturity. as a dude who recently sold his things and is making no money, i take issue with this! it's all about whether you can drive your kids to magnate school and then drive yourself to your upper-middle-mangagement job! that is how you know you're finally an adult.

Yessirree, the culturally acceptable lifestyle. I was talking to an american comrade yesterday and he seemed rather put off that neither I nor my officemate have cars.

And I was even feeling that last year when I got married, that somehow a ten year relationship is not valued but boy howdy put that stamp of weddingship on it, and now we're talking!

I am a hard core supporter of bikes!

however reading this post made me think about the main character in the comic book I'm writing and how he rides a bike because I think bikes are awesome and then about how the comic book is sort of in many ways about him not wanting to be a part of adult society. Damn!

I was thinking about that as I wrote the post too... "Um, maybe it is just that I don't want to be part of adult society and resent anything that suggests that this is not awesome."

that's still valid! i was going to suggest you make a movie about a guy who rides a bike to balance it out, then i was going to suggest making it a comic since that would be more realistic for you to do, but now i guess phil already has it covered.

A while ago I was feeling like doing a comic that was pedestrians vs cars in a mad max sort of environment... but after I got thinking about it, the action comic I was envisioning in my head made no sense. Maybe bikes...

(which are hard to draw!)

I actually thought about Breaking Away when I wrote this! I need to watch that again. Quicksilver may have actually crossed my mind as one movie trying to make bikes cool.

The only other one that popped into my head was ET, and that is well.. kids.
