Current music:Andrew WK - I Love NEW YORK CITY

MoCCA PhotOs

I made a concerted effort to take some photos of MoCCA, as I came out of TCAF with not ONE.
(well yes half of them were drunken photos around Times Square, but damn it I took pictures)

So this was the view from our hotel room. It was quite close to the Armory, and Times Square and stuff. The view was actually at least three times wider than this view. Those water containers on the rooftops! What are they for, besides helping Daredevil put out fires?

The room at our hotel had a big bed. I slept on the floor. But with only three of us in the room, it felt quite luxurious, compared to twelve person SPX rooms and so on. That is [info]daltonsharp.

Okay, one Times Square picture. midnight and raining, but us tourists were crawling all over the place.

Here is our table, Ed at the helm.
The Dave Cooper cover on You Ain't No Dancer #1, although the oldest book on the table, was likely the one that drew the most people in.

Trying to capture the giant vaulted feeling of the room. It made me feel like I was in the middle of Synecdoche, NY.

[info]musicslut Kean came by to say hi.

Just behind us was Phil McAndrew ( [info]heroprotagonist ) and friends. Phil was a true gentleman, and (along with Mike Stevens) helped watch our table while we went for lunch.

Here is Jason Keiffer and Ethan Rilly at the Young Men of Toronto table. Ethan is trying to flip to display Jason's "I Love You Gabrielle Bell" comic.

When I heard that the venue for the show was the Armory I was kind of excited as I vaguely recalled some Marcel Duchamp ARMORY SHOW connection. Yes it was that Armory, where the Nude Decending a Staircase caused a hoohaw.

There were display cases with rocket launchers and so forth lovingly displayed.

Also awesome doors. And wooden phone booths.

And Mike Stevens [info]blindmole  at a very popular spot on Sunday.

Looks like you guys had a really good time!

Dalton looks so freakin' relaxed. Only slightly like a CIA agent stationed in the Philippines.

We did have a good time.

When Ed and I arrived at the hotel, Dalton was so mellow and barefoot, and totally looked like some kind of guru who was going to be all "Hey guys, I'm glad you came to my comics chakra aligning clinic. Let's get drawing..."

I only ask because that view looks very much like the one we had when we stayed there (and the bed looks the same).

Hm. Sadly I can't recall the name of the hotel! It was at 34th and Lexington? Standing at the corner you could see the Empire state building in one direction, and the Chrysler Building in the other. It was cool.

You should have seen the horrifying photo Mike Stevens (and McPhil) took of himself while minding our table. "Pub thug" doesn't begin to do it justice.

haha awesome. I had no idea about the Duchamp connection! I heard someone saying it was where the urinal came from, but maybe that is just a lie? What is the broo ha ha about the nude?

I could be wrong, but I think the Armory is what Synechdoche was based on. It was a cool building! Did you get to see the crazy awesome wrap around war mural downstairs in the panel room?

Hooray for Mocca!

I believe the broo haha was that people in America were not used to cubism and all that jazz. Let's see what The Wikipedia says...

He submitted the painting to the 1913 Armory Show in New York City where Americans, accustomed to naturalistic art, were scandalized. Julian Street, an art critic for the New York Times wrote that the work resembled "an explosion in a shingle factory," and cartoonists satirized the piece. It spawned dozens of parodies in the years that followed.

I can't seem to find a specific reference to where the urinal caused its scandal.

It was nice to see you, though I didn't manage to spend much time with the CC posse. Oh well. Maybe SPX...
