The Page 100 Project [Mar. 19th, 2010|10:22 pm]

So ages ago, Dave Howard suggested to me that it might be an interesting idea for cartoonists to try adapting a part of a novel they liked. And then recently when JD Sallinger died, that notion came back to me, and then I thought oh it might be interesting to attempt to do a comic of some portion of one of his books. And as I sat on the couch staring at the shelves of books, I thought it might be fun to try it with different books. Maybe just a page. Maybe the SAME PAGE from each book. Say, page 100. And thus...

THE PAGE 100 PROJECT

Feel welcome to join in.

Here is my first attempt, from Michael Chabon's "Yiddish Policemen's Union"

I am keeping a list here of the pages people have done. Email me if you do one! jasonturner >at< jasonturnerproject.com

I will be curious to see how it works. In this instance I was lucky to have page 100 be the snappy end to a chapter!

This is a really cool idea, and the comic is great too. :)

Incidentally, I am curious about what you thought of the Policemen's Union. I found it was incredibly difficult to get into and found myself forcing my way through the book, which was less than pleasant.

Really? I am not quite finished it yet, but am quite liking it. It took me maybe a couple of chapters to really start grooving on it, but just flowed along after that. Enjoying the setting, something about the warmth from Berko and his wife to the down-and-out friend.

At times I felt like my lack of knowledge of matters Jewish (Jew-know) kept me from fully getting the gist of things, but never off-puttingly so.

I like this concept, and your take on it, a lot (Though I'm biased). I must admit, I'd rather see you adapt several pages from one book than one from several, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what new inspirations (and which novels) you come up with. Maybe I will finish that crack I took at Dylan Thomas.

Yeah, I am not sure where this will go. Something interesting to me in the few other books I've cracked to see if I would want to do them, is just how different novels operate from comics. So much more interior.

You should return to Dylan Thomas!

This is great! Love it.

I'm working on a project right now for a publisher called the Graphic Canon. It's an art and comic anthology based on literary works. I'm doing Paradise Lost in 12 illustrations. I'm so excited.

I've always had a dream project called Secondary Literary, where incidents in famous literary works would be told from the point of view of a secondary character, for instance I've always wanted to do Kafka's Metamorphosis from the point of view of the char women.

Wow, I will be interested to see your Paradise Lost! The Second Literary idea sounds really cool too.

Yeah, adapting a novel always sounds awesome but seems so daunting to me so this is much more appealing.

I have not read this book so it's interesting to read it out of context.

You are right that adapting a novel would be extremely daunting. This is much more do-able as an exercise for me.

As I have been considering doing other books now, it is interesting to just read the one page out of context and try to recall what the heck is going on.

This is fantastic. You really nailed the feel and rhythm of the book. Now I want to do Gentlemen of the Road!

Are you still going with this idea? I think it would be great if you took a book and each member did a page for it and then you could combine it at the end and have the full book done in comic style by all your members :) How Many Calories Should I Eat A Day

lovely

What an amazing idea! I love your execution of it.
What is also amazing about this is that it's a noble task that isn't daunting at all. Totally acheivable, which is what makes it attractive as an activity :)

Re: lovely

Yeah, that is what I liked about doing the one page, it makes it pleasingly achievable.

Also, you can sum up the idea in one snappy internet-friendly sentence!

Heard about it through Drawn

This is a great idea! I'm doing a drawing for every day of 2010 and I didn't do anything special for my hundredth drawing, so this'll be a fun way to celebrate. :)

Here's a simple one from The Secret Garden. I'm working on another that's a bit more detailed. :)
