The Page 100 Project [Mar. 19th, 2010|10:22 pm]

So ages ago, Dave Howard suggested to me that it might be an interesting idea for cartoonists to try adapting a part of a novel they liked. And then recently when JD Sallinger died, that notion came back to me, and then I thought oh it might be interesting to attempt to do a comic of some portion of one of his books. And as I sat on the couch staring at the shelves of books, I thought it might be fun to try it with different books. Maybe just a page. Maybe the SAME PAGE from each book. Say, page 100. And thus...

Feel welcome to join in.

Here is my first attempt, from Michael Chabon's "Yiddish Policemen's Union"

I am keeping a list here of the pages people have done. Email me if you do one! jasonturner >at< jasonturnerproject.com

What a fantastic idea! I really like your execution - your inks are really atmospheric, and I like the way you broke up the dialogue between the last two panels (and the shots you chose to go with).

Definitely have to try this, if I can only decide on a book.

Great idea! I saw this on drawn.ca and since I haven't done any kind of meme in a while, here's mine from CS Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet.

Thanks for sharing this idea. It was really fun to do. My page 100 is from Richard Dawkin's "The Selfish Gene".

Genius. Genius. Genius

Jason Turner = Genius.

Thanks so much for this idea. I've completed one, have one pencilled and one fully thumbnailed and in the queue. I'm addicted!

The first completed one is from "Sabriel" by Garth Nix:

I can't stop!

new Page One Hundred. This time from Terry Pratchett's Small Gods.

I'm really learning a lot from this both in terms of layout, transcribing and draftsmanship.

Thanks again for sharing this idea.

My P.100 Illustration

When I read about your Page 100 idea, I was reading "The Known World," by Edward P. Jones. Just so happened that on p. 100 was that book's most touching and memorable scene... Here is my take on it: http://bit.ly/aWXkWE

Thanks for the idea!
